You'll arrive at Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and take a short walk through the park's volcanic, moss-laden fields before meeting your friendly, experienced PADI Divemaster guide; then you'll be fitted with all necessary gear for snorkeling in Silfra - neoprene hoods and gloves, a thermal drysuit, snorkel and fins - that keep you buoyant and protected in the fissure; once in the water you'll see the incredible shades of blue and the natural underwater flora clinging to canyon walls, and as you glide you can literally swim across continents, alternating between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, with free GoPRO pictures sent to you by email after the tour.

Meet at the designated Silfra meeting point in Thingvellir National Park (full meeting instructions and exact coordinates are provided after booking). Arrive by car - you can sign the medical form on-site if needed. Please arrive on time and prepared for cold-water snorkeling.

  • Not recommended if you are pregnant or have poor cardiovascular health.
  • You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness and be comfortable in the water; you must be able to swim.
  • Read, sign, and follow the directions on the Silfra snorkeling medical statement (you can complete it at the meeting location).
  • You must communicate in English during the tour and be physically fit to participate.
  • You must be willing to wear a tight, constricting dry suit provided to protect you from the cold.
  • Height and weight limits: minimum 135 cm, maximum 200 cm; weight between 30 and 140 kilos.
  • Age requirements: minimum 12 years old (those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian booked on the same tour); maximum 69 years old.
  • If you are over 60 years of age you need a medical waiver (page 2 of the medical statement); if you are over 45 and have smoked pipes or had heavy alcohol intake you also need a waiver.
  • If you have neurological, circulatory, respiratory issues or other underlying health conditions you may be required to submit a physician’s allowance to participate.
  • This is a self-drive tour - you must arrive by your own car as there are no public buses to the meeting point.
  • Silfra gets very busy in summer; book the earliest morning or late afternoon tours here to avoid crowds.
  • Participants over 69 years old are not allowed to join this tour.

Summary: While at first I was apprehensive about how cold the water was; it was cold…. But it was so worth it. We went on a day was very cold and windy. I would recommended and when we come back I would do it again.
