Explore Stone Town's History on a Walking Tour in Zanzibar Town

When you explore Stone Town - also called Old Town and known locally as Mji Mkongwe - in Zanzibar City, you step into the island’s layered history shaped by local communities, Persians, the Portuguese and the Sultanate of Oman, and learn about the region’s role in the slave trade in East Africa; the tour delivers rich context alongside visits to signature landmarks like the House of Wonders, the Old Fort and the Freddy Mercury Museum. You can stroll to waterfront highlights such as Forodhani Garden and the social hub of Jaws Corner, browse local life at Darajani Market, and reflect at the site of the former slave market and nearby Anglican and Catholic church buildings. Across winding alleys you’ll notice Arabic, Indian and local Zanzibari architectural details - from ornate doors and windows to distinctive facades - while the newer part of the city, Ng'ambo, provides contrast as “the other side.”
