Travel Purpose: leisure
Positive: The Avid Hotel is a comfortable but fairly basic hotel. It's main appeal (to us) is that its location (Voi) is between the Tsavo East & Tsavo West Game Parks, so it makes a reasonable & relatively inexpensive base if you want to explore both parks, since the gate to Tsavo East is very close. The express train between Nairobi & Mombasa stops at Voi. Avid features a buffet breakfast with excellent local fruit juice, eggs any way you want them, sausages, & a handful of local dishes. The rooms are basic but completely adequate, with OK WiFi throughout.
Negative: If your expectations are low, Avid is perfectly adequate. There's no elevator, & our room (213) was actually on the 4th floor. The train tracks run right behind the hotel, but the trains seem to stop about midnight. The restaurant also serves dinner, but it's a good idea to get your order in early, for a time an hour or more in the future, rather than ordering as you sit down. While the showers have hot water, it can take a while to arrive, & you don't usually have to mix it with any cold. A single liquid soap dispenser is provided, but no shampoo or any other toiletries. Basic, but adequate for us.
Summary: An adequate budget hotel between 2 game parks, with a nice buffet breakfast.
