Summary: We had a wonderful time sledding around Kam Lake. The dogs were very friendly, well behaved and eager to pull the sled. The log warm up cabin was very inviting. We enjoyed having bannock and warm drinks inside while listening to Winter’s father’s trapping and hunting stories. The whole adventure was very relaxing.

Summary: I saw a dogsled demo in Alaska, but here you can actually ride in the sled and it’s really fun! Not a real long ride, but long enough, and I recommend a good had and sunglasses. We are dog lovers and dog owners and can say that it is totally humane and they take good care of their dogs.

Summary: This involved a 20 minutes sled ride, watching the harnessing, but little interaction with the dogs. We were able to cuddle some puppies, though.

Summary: I had a wonderful time meeting the family running this business, their dogs, and learning a bit about dog sledding. It is clear they care deeply for their dogs' well-being, and put the safety of the dogs first when making decisions about tours. I visited during unseasonably warm temps, and as a result some changes were made to the path our ride took and the number of dogs pulling the sled was increased to reduce the strain on the dogs. I also appreciated that they were willing to cancel tours if it wasn't safe for the dogs. It was comforting to know that these dogs were so well cared for. I enjoyed swapping stories about hunting and trapping while sharing some bannock and hot chocolate after the ride, and the dogs were all extremely friendly and clearly loved their work as much as they loved the attention they get from tourists.

Summary: If I had to pick one thing other than the northern lights I saw to remember from my entire trip to Yellowknife, it would be this dog sledding experience and meeting the McQueen family! Absolutely an amazing, incredible, stunning experience! From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the family and their house dogs, sat in a cozy wooden cabin to warm up, and then invited to the snowy backyard. Nine sledding dogs were picked and the four of us (plus Wynter) began sledding! It was such an interesting and fascinating experience — it was fast yet very stable, the dogs were extremely strong and well trained and smart, and the frozen lake and forest view along the way is breathtaking. Wynter would also explain to us when we pass certain sceneries or when she’s giving certain commands to the dogs. It wasn’t very cold as the family has kindly gave us blankets and also warm gloves to cover both us and our cameras on. I absolutely enjoyed every second of the entire experience (me and my friend had to pick between doing dog sledding and snow motorcycle due to time issue, and we unanimously agreed that the quality of this dog sledding experience, along with meeting the McQueen family, made it the best choice!). After our sled return, we watch the sled dogs returning to their individual cozy little homes one by one, and were led by the family to go back to the cabin. We were kindly offered hot beverages, cookies, and bread with a home-made maple syrup butter (which was very delicious and memorable), and shared some time chatting together. Overall, I cannot think of better words to summarize this experience than amazing and spectacular. Doing dog sledding with the McQueen family is a must-do experience here in Yellowknife! PS, Me and my friend wholeheartedly agreed that this kind of multi-generational family-run operation surpasses the common “big-company style” because the entire trip has such an exceptional quality (no rushing or commercial feel). Both the house dogs and the sled dogs were treated like true family members. Wynter and River remember every dog by name (and by heart), personality (or dog-sonality?), what they are good at, their diet, and even how well they get along with their roommates. As a dog lover with a pet dog back home, I was deeply impressed by the love and care every dog received here. Cannot recommend it highly enough!
