Tikal is simply amazing. It was extraordinary arriving at 4:30 am and walking the tracks when it was dark, hearing the howler monkeys. The sun rise is often a no-show, and honestly, I'm not sure if it is really worth it.
However, the Tikal itself is incredible. We were fortunate enough to have a guide (Lloyd) who took us around the back ways, avoiding crowds, and saving the most jaw-dropping views until last.

My wife and I wanted a private tour so we could go at our own pace because we had a baby with us. Tikal Go had set us up with Donald who was a master of knowledge when it came to history, architecture, flora, fauna, and geography. He was able to deliver information and education in bite-size doses so as to not overwhelm us. He also set the pace so we could visit less popular but more magical sections of the park. It was obvious that he knew the area well, because he had a good cadence between hiking and breaks. He also knew which areas to let us explore independently and which areas we needed someone with a trained eye to point things out. My wife and I both feel like if we got someone else as a guide we would have gotten a completely different experience. If you are flexible with time, I implore you to tell Tikal Go that you are willing to wait for Donald to be available. Aside from the guide, the tour company is great, and had set up transfers to and from our b&b as well as meals on-site.
